Number of Domestic Overnight Visitors

Number of Overnight Domestic Visitors to the Blue Mountains

What are we monitoring?

The number of domestic overnight visitors to the Blue Mountains.

Domestic overnight visitors are defined as those that stay in Blue Mountains and reside in Sydney, regional NSW and interstate.

The trend information in the graph and the table below shows the number of domestic visitors that stayed overnight in the Blue Mountains local government region.

What is the trend?

The number of domestic overnight visitors to the Blue Mountains region has declined significantly from 2000. The lowest rate of overnight visitations occurred in 2004. Since 2004, the visitation rate recovered somewhat in 2005 when the rate returned to 2003 levels and another slight increase occurred during 2006.

Why is monitoring this trend important?

Tourism is a major industry for the Blue Mountains and as such, the number of visitors to the region can provide insights into the effectiveness of our tourism promotions and how the region is perceived as a tourist destination. Tourism also places added pressure on ecosystems and the natural environment in addition to development pressure on local amenities, infrastructure and resources.
