Retrofitting Workshop - Transition Blue Mountains

Making pelmets
Making pelmets

Transition Blue Mountains hosted its first retrofitting workshop at the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre in June 2009. Hosts Laurie Strathdee, Catherine Higgins and Jed Walker started the day with a discussion about insulation, followed by a practical session on finding and sealing household gaps, mostly around doors and windows. Participants applied a specialist plastic film over windows to insulate in a similar way to double-glazing.

The group also made simple wooden window pelmets which, when used with thick curtains, help retain heat and reduce energy use. Many participants took their new pelmets home to install. The next retrofitting workshop will be held at the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre on August 1 – however, places will be filled by people who are on the waiting list. For more information, call Laurie on 4782.1117.
