Friends of the Earth Climate Change Forum 2006
On 4 March 2006 Friends of the Earth Blue Mountains held a successful Climate Change Forum and Workshop at the World Heritage Institute.
The speakers at the event included:
John Merson - Executive Director of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute, and a member of UNESCO's working group on climate change - "Perspectives from the World Heritage Institute". John's talk examined the relationship between climate change and bush fires.
Dr John Kaye - Greens NSW Climate Action Working Group, energy expert, university academic and former senate candidate - "Averting the Greenhouse Catastrophe: Solutions for the Home, Work, Community, and Nation". John's workshop explored:
- Scientific evidence and consequences of runaway global warming
- Sources of greenhouse pollution in Australia
- Positive solutions that will create a sustainable, jobs-rich future
- The politics of transforming Australia to a world leader in climate friendly technologies.
Michelle Braunstein - Climate Justice Campaigner, Friends of the Earth Australia - "Climate Change and Human Rights". Michelle discussed how climate change is damaging food and water security, local livelihoods and sovereignty of people in the global south, due to the benefits that most of us have in industrialised countries - air conditioning, driving, flying and so on. Friends of the Earth Climate Justice campaign illuminates the growing humanitarian crisis that is climate change, and presents the case for Australia's recognitionand acceptance of climate refugees from the Pacific.
