The Question
Given that nearly 60% of businesses in the Blue Mountains are sole traders, do you think that the Sutherland Shire Hub for Economic Development model is relevant to our community and worth pursuing?

I love the idea of an incubator but I question if it is something we can afford at present. they really do work but require a dedicated site and team of people to make it happen - Also by the very nature of the program you are only going to be able to "incubate" 10 to 20 businesses at a time and at this early stage we should really focus on creating as much buzz as possible.

I also took on board prof. Blakely's point about exploiting an untapped knowledge base our older community possesses. We can actually etsablish an informal incubator if people would be prepared to offer their time and knwledge.

I for example would be happy to offer 1 day a week or month or whatever works to any person or organisation which felt it could use my skills.

I propose that we post a skills register which allows people like myself to post their cv by way of explanation of capability and let the business community tap into the resource.

If this informal program takes flight we then can think about etsblishing a more structured incubator program - we also will have independent opinion as to what businesses may prosper and which may not from feedback from the informal advisers. this affords greater access for all those thinking they can use some help without having to jump the hurdles of the necessarily more formal incubator program.

But an incubator should definitely be on the agenda.

Again, I agree with johncozzi I think an incubator is a good idea the problem from my point of view is not buildings or location but the ability to access capital especially seed capital.

I think something like the model proposed by johncozzi is worth pursuing the council could offer some space like meeting rooms on say each Saturday and I like the idea of an Economic Development Committee as a low cost solution rather that a lot of salaried staff.

When my business outgrew a spare bedroom, there was nowhere to go next.

There is basically no rentable office space in the Blue Mountains.

A Business Accelerator site, where I could rent 1-4 office spaces, plus access lunch room and meetings rooms, woud have been perfect during the development of my business.

Council owns large tracts of land in Lawson Industrial Estate, within 10 minutes walk of Lawson Station, right smack in the middle of the City of Blue Mountains.

Council should pursue grant funding to construct a Business Accelerator.

I believe however that the facility should actually be consstructed and run by private enterprise, or we'll end up with mud bricks, passive solar heating and a thatched roof, designed by a committee, rather than a professionally-presented office facility.

ServCorp (www.servcorp.net) would be an excellent company to approach as this is similar to what they do around the world.

Grant funding and an offer of cheap land could be used to attract their investment, after which the facility should pay for itself.

Hi,
If you're in debt, you may have heard of debt management plans and of IVAs (Individual Voluntary Arrangements) You may wonder how they differ and you may wonder – most importantly – which one could be right for you

Thanks
