The Question
We’ve heard from professor Blakely about the need to diversify the local economy. What type of businesses should be encouraged to locate and grow in the Blue Mountains to strengthen the diversity? Eg IT businesses, “green” industry?

We actually already have a pretty diverse range of business activities taking place. we just have not spent much time discovering what is going on.
I think learning more about what we have and how we might use some of the learnings from yesteday to exploit existing opportunity is a great way to start.
What I think was clear to me from the forum comments as to type of business is that the ideas all were around KNOWLEDGE based enterpirses rather than say manufacturing or retail etc.
Certainly knowledge based business lends itself to our smaller community and affords us the opportunity to thinkn and act globally - As with say india you don'
t have to have a physical presence to export knowledge - it can be produced an d delivered anywhere.
I also think the opportunity exists to think about how different businesses can compliment each other as with Ashland Oregon and the Shaekespear festival - the whole community benefits as there is need for accommodation and food and other services which enhance the reason for the event and makes the whole experience that much better.

My first thoughts were that Software Development would be an ideal industry but as Professor Blakely said software is now more than just computer programming it is content development.
The points that have made me think are :-
1. The diversity need to be deep not shallow.
2. That businesses grow from what is already there
3. Retail is a wealth destroyer
4. The industrial areas are located away from the town centres and public transport
5. There is a lack of local business resources
I agree with the comments from johncozzi that we need to find out what is already here.
I think IT Businesses will be a growth area as there are not many homes greater than 4.7Km from the highway. Thus I would expect that we could get 99% broadband coverage. On the negative side most of the big players in IT are in the Ryde area so developing the Blue Mountains as the IT hub is unlikely to happen. However, from the creative side we have it here so maybe using what Professor Blakely said the IT Brand could be “Sydney” or “Australia”. We already have strong links to the USA and video conference on a weekly basis so we already promote the Blue Mountains as the place it is at.
Also, on the negative side as broadband is worldwide it is not a unique opportunity just for the Blue Mountains.
The Blue Mountains is Lifestyle, Environment, Quality, Accommodation, Tourism, Art, Creativity, Outdoor Activity, Healthy Living. Unfortunately, at the moment it is not Wealth or a Business Centre.
I think there may be a danger of the Blue Mountains just becoming a “home office” location for City Businesses and not a Wealth Creation location.

The speakers from Baulkham Hills/Cairns and Sutherland both made it plain that '
picking winners'
is NOT the way to go. We should be looking to grow existing mountains-based businesses, not attracting businesses from other LGA'
s. The Business Accelerator would be an excellent way to encourage growth of Home Based businesses into SME'
s, thus generating employment.
